Clinique is currently owned by Estee Lauder and was launched in 1968. It is one of the world's largest suppliers of makeup and fragrances and first appeared at Saks Fifth Avenue. The concept of Clinique came from an article titled ?Can Great Skin Be Created? by Dr. Norman Orentreich. His article discussed the need for a skin care line which was dermatologically tested and approved. Estee Lauder brought Dr. Oretreich onboard and together launched Clinique.
Clinique's skin care is based on a 3-step approach to cleansing the face. The first step involves washing the face with a bar soap which can come in mild or extra-strength. The second step is exfoliating using a toner and lastly moisturizing. Clinique also carries a line of fragrance-free hair care. The hair care line includes shampoos, conditioners and fixatives.
Clinique launched its fragrance line in 1971 with Aromatics Elixir. This perfume contains a blend of rose, jasmine, ylang ylang and vetiver. Aromatics Elixir perfume was designed for women who were unable to wear perfumes due to skin allergies. The fragrance was intended to be suitable for more sensitive skins and considered the world's first hypo-allergenic fragrance.
Next, Clinique launched Happy perfume. Happy is advertised as being, ?a hint of citrus, a wealth of flowers, a mix of emotions and a chic, modern multi-layered sparkling floral.? Happy perfume became such a success Clinique created two sister fragrances, Happy To Be and Happy Heart. Clinque launched two men's fragrances Chemistry Skin Cologne and Happy for men. Both fragrances were recommended for daily wear and contain notes of Jamaican ginger, citrus and amber.
Clinique continues to be a successful skin care and perfume line. The selling success of Clinique appears to lie in its hypo-allergenic products tailored to those with more sensitive skin.
