Oscar de la Renta was born on July 22, 1932 in the Dominican Republic. He moved to Spain at the age of 18 and studied painting at the Academy of San Fernando. While there, Oscar changed his field of study to fashion. Oscar left Spain and moved to Paris where he joined Antonio Castillo as a couture assistant. The doors opened immediately for Oscar and he was asked to design clothes for Elizabeth Arden, shoes and accessories for Brittany Rosano and ready-to-wear garments for Christian Dior. Unsure of what to do, Oscar sought out advice from the editor-in-chief of Vogue, Diana Vreeland. He told her he wanted to design ?ready-to-wear, because that is where the money is.? Vreeland replied, ?Then go to Arden because you will make your reputation faster. She is not a designer, so she will promote you. At the other place, you will always be eclipsed by the name of Dior.? Oscar took the advice and spent two years working for Arden before launching his own label.
Oscar launched his own design label in New York in 1965. Following this, he branched out launching fragrances in 1977. The first fragrance Oscar de la Renta launched was Oscar. Oscar won two Fifi awards including ?best women's fragrance? and ?perennial success? award in 1992. The next perfume launched by Oscar was Volupte in 1992. This perfume was an instant success due to its award-winning floral-oriental notes. Oscar de la Renta was rewarded for his excellence in designing perfumes when he received the Living Legend award from the American Society of Perfumers in 1995.
