Issey Miyake was born in Japan and studied graphic design at the Tama Art University in Tokyo. Miyake graduated and moved to Paris where he worked under Guy Laroche and Hubert de Givenchy in fashion design. In 1970, Miyake returned to Japan and launched the Miyake Design Studio. In 1991, Miyake was asked to design costumes for a ballet in Frankfurt. He was asked to design 40 of them and given a carte blanche. Miyake designed 400 costumes.
Issey Miyake launched his first fragrance for women in 1992. L'Eau d'Issey perfume for women is a light fragrance with a blend of soft floral notes. Following this perfume Miyake introduced L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme in 1994. Both fragrances were very successful and Miyake sold his line of fragrances to Shiseido. He now has the financial backing to compete in the fragrance market as well as design assistance from Shiseido.
