The Art and Heart of Regifting

top_regift_357x147Regifting has been around for quite a while now.  Jerry, Elaine, George and Kramer may have made the term and practice official,  but perhaps, if only Adam hadn’t started it all when he regifted that half-chewed apple to Eve, then all men might still be living very quiet lives, just sitting on a warm rock somewhere just outside the garden of Eden, scratching themselves, lazy, lonely but also happily bored?  Eve would’ve gotten off easy, too, then found the shopping tree or the ladyshoe tree at the other end of the garden, and the twain might never have met again.

Speaking of regifting, one saves money, of course by resending out these brand new and sometimes expensive gifts that otherwise get discarded or forgotten forever in some dusty closet.  It’s a green activity.  The trick lies in making sure the original gift-giver and the regiftee never make the connection, of course.  Simple things like making sure both are not in the same calling circle, that they aren’t poker or salon or chatroom friends.  Although some families actually do have a fun tradition of knowingly regifting a most hated or silly item like an ugly lamp or fossilized rum cake between each other,  often proving time and time again that just the thought can have your whole family laughing and rolling on the floor.

The art is in finding those gifts a proper home, with someone who really botregift_357x147wants and appreciates them.  Nice new giftwrap, with perhaps a gift bag and of course, a personal card.  A little mental detective work is needed to remember and figure out who would really love or make use of  this gift in the back of the closet right now.  Perhaps a nice new perfume for someone who would actually wear it.   Or a good bottle of wine or spirits that would never get tasted otherwise.  And never just a gift for the sake of giving a gift, with no thought to the one receiving it.  If that’s the case, then sending the item to a charitable institution would be better.  Otherwise, you’re saving money, not wasting stuff that ’s needed or useful elsewhere, careful to never hurt the original sender, and making someone else smile.  Now that, is the heart of regifting.

Of course, after they receive the gift, they might disagree with your best judgement and your noblest intentions and regift the gift again in turn.  Some gifts may just have to stay in the chain forever.
