Knowing the bases used in perfumes and colognes
You may notice that I use a few buzzwords to describe different types of perfume for women every once in a while. Terms like "floral" and "citrusy" aren't just pleasant adjectives, they're also two of the several different types of fragrance.
Here's the rundown of each, with a few examples that might help you get a better idea of what each fragrance smells like.
Chypre – Chypre is French for Cyprus, the name of the island that inspired this earthy, woody fragrance. Estee Lauder's Knowing is one popular example of a Chypre perfume, while Gucci for Men is a cologne that incorporates these tones.
Citrus – It's pretty simple – citrus is the fruity, tangy base you'll find in aromas like Eau De Cartier, a unisex fragrance, as well as Mugler.
Floral – This is the most popular fragrance type, and for that reason you won't have difficulty finding a perfume for women with classic floral influences. A few notable examples include Versace Bright Crystal perfume and Gucci Rush.
Fougere – This is another earthy fragrance category, but with herbal influences instead. French for the word fern, Fougere products are mostly used in men's fragrances, and it's most popular example may be Cool Water cologne.
Green – A brisk mix of herbal and floral scents, this outdoorsy fragrance might be considered a female companion to fougere. You may recognize Diesel Green and Diorissimo as Green fragrances.
Oriental – Warm, exotic fragrances flush with spices and resins populate this category. Prime examples include Obsession and Euphoria perfume.
Gourmand – These are food-based fragrances – the popular Angel by Thierry Mugler may be the most prominent example of a Gourmand perfume.
