Perfume Glossary

You may have heard of words such as cologne, parfum, eau de toilette and many more. These are all fragrances that you can wear; however, they all have slight differences which make them different from each other.

Splash
Splash is a perfume fragrance that is designed to be used all over the body and therefore has less of a fragrant content. A splash usually contains more alcohol and water than your average bottle of perfume because it is not meant to be overpowering since it’s meant to be used all over the body.

Eau de cologne
Eau de cologne is another type of fragrance that you’ve probably herd of. It contains a weak concentration of around 3 percent scent in a base made of mainly water.

Eau de toilette
Eau de toilette is a term you’ve no doubt heard before. It is one of the most commonly found fragrances, and the base will be either water or alcohol with a scent ration of around 3 to 8 percent. Generally, Eau de toilette will have a pungent smell that will last for a good deal longer than eau de cologne.

Eau de parfum
Eau de parfum is the French word for perfume. This particular fragrance will has an alcohol base but will contain more scent ingredients. The ratio is usually around 10 to 15 percent.

Parfum
Parfum or perfume by itself generally has an alcohol base with the highest concentration of scent ingredients alongside it. Occasionally it can be noted that there is no difference in scent or fragrance content between eau de toilette and eau de cologne but it is always best to check this.

No matter what type of fragrance your trying to pinpoint, Big Discount Fragrances carries a massive inventory of all your favorite designer discount perfumes and designer-brand discount colognes.

Choosing The Right Discount Perfume For The Woman In Your Life

PerfumeNo matter how well you know your woman, buying her a new perfume is often one of the most challenging for men. Perfume is one of the best gifts you can give your partner for her birthday, anniversary or any other occasion because it’s a gift that, when bought correctly, shows affection, adoration and a true sense that you care to delve into fragrances that are completely outside your comfort zone. Big Discount Fragrances offers a massive inventory of discount perfume that your significant other will just adore, and in this blog we’ll give you the lowdown on how to choose a fragrance she’ll never forget!

If you a new member of the world of women’s discount perfume then the market can be overwhelming. There are so many varying choices, so many flavors and so many bottles; however, finding the right one is easier than you think: All you need is the use of a good sales assistant or one of your partner’s relative. Even if you think you know your woman better than anyone else—chances are you might not! Ask relatives about the fragrances she likes just to get a more targeted idea.

Do Your Research

Another key to finding a perfect fragrance match is to simply know your woman’s personality and expound on that. If you are looking for a fragrance that your partner can wear to work then citrus aromas are perfect. If your partner has a bubbly personality—then more exotic scents could be incorporated such as melon, lilies and passion fruit.

If you’re still unsure you may want to opt with a subtle fragrance and then add a hint of  vanilla or musk for a little extra zing. A lot of perfumes will contain vanilla and the scent itself will actually be changed by another fragrance so vanilla with citrus will have a younger appeal whereas vanilla with sandalwood will have a completely different smell.

If you’re shopping around for the perfect perfume for your woman—then check out Big Discount Fragrances and browse our selection of amazing designer discount perfumes. No matter what your woman’s taste in scents are—you’re sure to find it at Big Discount Fragrances.

The Origins Of Perfume Ingredients

The origins of perfume date back to the time of Ancient Egypt when herbs, oils, flowers and spices were used to create potent aromas for special occasions, ceremonies and tomb burials. Though perfumery has evolved much since the era of the ancient Egyptians, many of the same fragrances, essential oils, and Perfumeextracts are still used today. While most people are correct in assuming that perfumes are concocted from a mix of chemical and natural ingredients—the formulas are largely kept strictly confidential by the designer, so it’s difficult to know what exactly is in our favorite scent. With so many discount designer-brand perfumes and colognes to choose from, Big Discount Fragrances knows it can be difficult to make the selection that’s right for your individual tastes. In the following article, we’re going to give you the scoop on the basic perfume ingredients so you can boost your perfumery know-how.

The Perfume Base Formula

All perfumes, from cost effective drugstore to high-end designer brands, have the same basic formula that consist of water, alcohol fragrance oils and chemical compounds.  These four ingredients form the basic structure of a perfume, but the variations of fragrant oils and chemical additives used in each perfume are endless.

Perfume ingredients - the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Natural Oils
Natural Oils are derived from two sources, plants and animals. Many natural oils can be mimicked artificially and provide a cost and time-efficient advantage during the manufacturing process. Though some perfume houses still prefer to use the real thing, natural oils, especially those extracted from animals, often poses ecological and environmental concern.

Plant Sources
Flowers, blossoms, leaves, twigs, roots, bulbs, seeds, fruit, wood, moss and bark are the most commonly used natural ingredients in perfume. Pure extracts of these sources are called essential oils and are the most costly form of fragrant oils.

Synthetic Oils

During the Industrial Revolution, it was found that many flower essences could be chemically reproduced for a more cost effective option to extracting natural oils. Virtually any scent can be imitated. In addition, hard-to-capture scents can also be created through chemical compounds.

When you’re shopping around for your next discount perfume, cologne, fragrant soaps, crèmes or shower gels—know to shop for the natural oils or plant extracts that you like. If you’re looking for a discount lily-scented perfume or body wash, check out the variety of discount fragrances we have available.

Choosing The Right Discount Fragrance With Allergies

PerfumeIf you’ve ever experienced irritated skin or experienced an allergic reaction as a result of using scented products—you’re not alone. Though many people claim to have fragrance allergies, the truth is that only 2 percent of the actual population truly has a true skin allergy, while the majority actually just experiences forms of skin irritations. As trade secrets keep the exact ingredients of perfumes confidential from the consumer, it is hard to know what triggers a reaction and what the allergy symptoms are. At Big Discount Fragrances, we offer the widest variety of discount perfumes; however, we also want to make sure we can help give you the hand-tailored information you need to make the fragrance selection that’ll be perfect for your skin type.

Allergy vs. Sensitivity

It is critical to know the difference between perfume allergies and sensitivity to certain fragrances.
A perfume allergy is a reaction of the body’s immune system to one or more chemical ingredients in a perfumed product. This includes anything that has a scent- shampoo, laundry detergent, body lotion and perfume are some examples. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include troubled breathing, dizziness, nausea, wheezing and asthma attacks.

If you think you have an allergic reaction to any of the perfume products you may be using, it’s critical that you seek medical attention immediately if any of these symptoms become apparent. Generally, a physician can perform an allergy test, but with the vast number of chemicals in perfume—it may be difficult to obtain a definite cause.

A perfume sensitivity, which is by far the most common, usually results with the reaction of the skin to one or more ingredients in a fragranced product. The majority of consumers who claim to have an allergy actually have a sensitivity to one or more ingredients in a fragranced product. Common ways to tell if your skin is sensitive to the perfume are: Dermatitis, Eczema, and commonly itchy and watery eyes.

These symptoms are usually stabilized by washing the fragranced product off with soap and water and discontinuing its use. A hydrocortisone cream will aid minor skin rashes and if necessary, an antihistamine can be taken to reduce irritated sinuses.

Choosing the Right Product

Whether you’re shopping around for a new perfume or cologne, or you’re just opting with your everyday mainstay, the chances are fairly low that you have an allergy to perfume products. With a plethora of designer brand discount fragrances to choose from, Big Discount Fragrances is sure to have the right perfume or cologne that’s suitable to your skin. Juicy Couture - putting fun into fashion

Sassy, flirty and a bit tongue-in-cheek, Juicy Couture is the ultimate girlie girl brand, especially when it comes to perfume. Juicy Couture was first made famous when Madonna was photographed in a Juicy velour tracksuit with “Madge” emblazoned across the back. Since then,  the brand has become a multi-million dollar success. Created by dynamic duo Gela Nash-Taylor and Pamela Skaist-Levy, the Juicy Couture brand features a collection of products including women’s casual wear, men’s wear, a high end couture line, computer accessories, handbags, fashion for pets, and of course the infamous Juicy Couture perfume.

After a relatively slow start to their business during the first several years, things picked up drastically after they sent their designs to celebrities in hope of attracting some press. This PR move turned out to be a huge success, and with Madonna leading the Juicy bandwagon, celebrities and the public went crazy for Juicy Couture.

Juicy Couture built a strong base marketing to young women aged 14-26. The brand used coy phrases on their garments, along with the signature “Juicy” emblazoned on the back of their track suit bottoms to create a distinguishable brand image. Juicy boutiques have expanded from the flagship Rodeo Drive shop to outlets all over the world including Dubai, Australia, and the Far East.

Juicy Couture perfume for women is a soft oriental scent that featuring watermelon, passion fruit, apple, rose and lily along with caramel, vanilla and patchouli. Coco Chanel - From rags to the Ritz

Born in 1883 in Saumur, a small French village, Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel was orphaned at six years of age and spent her formative years either in an orphanage or in the care of relatives. By 1910 she had opened a women’s hat shop in Paris and from there moved into designing clothes. Her revolutionary concept for the time, was that a women should be able to feel comfortable in luxury and it was through the simplicity of her designs that this was achieved.  By 1923, however, Chanel was put on the map globally with the creation of the iconic Chanel No. 5, which to this day remains the top selling fragrances for women worldwide.  With its Art Deco bottle—Chanel No. 5 became one of the most popular fragrances in the world. Legend has it that the name came from the multiple perfume samples that were mixed for her to choose from, each sample was labeled No.1, No.2, and so on and the perfume sample she chose was No.5, and the name stuck. It was the first perfume to bear a designer’s name. Some of the famous celebs that have endorsed Chanel No.5 include Jackie Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe and Anne Baxter.
